In 1877 Thomas Edison pulled a sheet of tin foil under a needle and heard a voice, his own voice, say the words “Mary had a little lamb.” It was the first time anyone, in the history of humanity, had heard recorded sound.
Edison and his associates were anxious to know what the general population would think of this marvelous new invention. They quickly mocked up a portable prototype and started testing it on random strangers.
The people had no reaction at all. “What do you hear?” the Edison associates would ask. “Nothing,” the people would respond. Just some strange noise. The idea or recorded human speech was so alien to them, so incomprehensibly futuristic, that they couldn’t even fathom what they were hearing.
The Edison employee would then explain that this device was called a phonograph. It was able to make a record of human speech and reproduce it on command. What you are about to hear, they would explain, is a record of human speech.
They then played the sound again. The bystanders were then able to repeat the sentences that they heard word for word. They were gob-smacked. Astonished that this mechanical device could reproduce the human voice.
Because of that innovation, you are able to enjoy this bit of recorded sound, 150 years later. And in the spirit of Edison and his team, we want to explain what this podcast is, so that you can understand it a little better.

Because the best customer experiences aren’t created out of nowhere, they are often inspired by the past. You may have heard the saying “good artists borrow, but great artists steal.” I came up with that.
We want to provide you with the great ideas that you will be proud to steal from.
